About Us

To be honest, gardening isn't something that has played a role in our family from the beginning. Partly because we were students when we married, partly because we were just too busy. But one day we brought home a bag of soil, a plastic box to attach to our window, and a jumbo pack of pansies. From then on, potted plants began taking over the porches of our apartments. Each windowsill had a little baby plant reaching towards the sun, our kitchen tables had a few succulents (that always die. No matter what we try.), and we started imagining what  we wanted in our own garden.

A year living in England was our big life changer. Everywhere we went there were gardens. Gardens and flowers. Flowers and shrubs. Shrubs and trees. Trees and, well, flowers. The scheming and dreaming really started to take off.

So here we are now, with our 0.2 acres in the Mountain  West, growing our dream. We're building and planting, making mistakes and having success. The greatest part is, we get to share this dream with 3 little compatriots, who you will see here and there in this blog. Because for us, the work and the gardening is a family affair. From choosing plants, to helping design, to manual laborevery part of our Bluebird Garden includes our boys. Gardening is now part of our family identity, something that brings us great pleasure in doing together.

About us:

Mrs. B: Demands at least 1,000 Zinnia seeds to be planted each year and has no self control when it is time to buy spring bulbs in the fall. The family garden book is full of rough sketches done in gel pen, and she expects Mr. B to be able to build anything she likes. She also has the ultimate veto power on anything in the garden.

Mr. B: The big projects are saved for when he is around, and he always uses pencil to sketch out his ideas. Circles must be done with a stake and a string and projects are always built to last when he is in charge. He enables Mrs. B when it comes to purchasing any flowers for the garden and is determined to figure out a way to have an English Garden in an semi-arid climate.

H: Thinks that work is the best kind of play. He marches around the garden with an air of authority and is always game to haul dirt in his wheelbarrow or spray weeds.

J: Wants to dig, dig, dig in the "dirty dirt" all day every day. He loves Lady Bugs and worms, and wants to be sure all the creatures are happy in our garden.

P: Recently learned, the hard and emotional way, that gravel must stay with the gravel, dirt with the dirt, and sand in the sandbox. He wants to be part of everything, but, to be honest, his naps are when the greatest amount of work is accomplished.
